The somewhat new Rolex Daytona, what has been changed? One, the lugs are now symmetrical. Most may like that while some will not because it was done deliberately to counter the weight of the pushers. Two, a steel ring surrounds the bezel to allegedly give it a more classic look. Three, the end of the lugs have been flattened to give a more flushed look sitting on the wrist.

Its case is said to be 40mm but it often turns out to be about 38.5mm which explains why the Daytona wears so well on medium to small sized wrists. How is it possible for both the Submariner and GMT II to also measure at 40mm when they wear so differently to a Daytona. Despite the changes made to the latest generation, it still wears comfortably and gives little to no fatigue from a full day of wearing. What I like the most about a Daytona is how nice it is to wear, but that is often buried by the hype surrounding this watch.

White or black dial. That is one tough decision. The black dial looks more nicely finished to my eyes. I am usually decisive but I also do not want to miss out on the fun that people are having with a white dial. Furthermore, it would be nice for me to have my first white dialled Rolex, so I went back to have a proper look at both the black and white dial.

The Oysterflex Ghost was even thrown into the equation so I could be sure if a steel Daytona is what I am truly after. You know which one I went home with.

A new movement for the new Daytona. Calibre 4131, which is quite a looker now, but no clear case back here unless it is in platinum or a Le Mans special edition. Send me an email if there is a place that does this modification. I thank you in advance. That apart, 72 hours of power reserve and plus minus two seconds accuracy in this package is, I have to say, pretty impressive.

No surprise with Rolex really knowing how to make watches. The feedback from the pushers and the sound they make are highly satisfying. Screw down pushers are a bit of a bummer and will discourage use but when you are in the mood, it is always rewarding. Even time setting is a thing of joy. That pop when the crown is pulled out for time setting is an event that still doesn't get old.

The current iteration of the Daytona is an illustration of design perfection. I am sure most will agree it has perfect proportions. From case dimensions to every single detail on the dial, everything feels right down to the millimetre.

There is something for everyone in the Daytona catalogue. A two tone has its charm, while an Oysterflex makes it feel like a completely different watch. Having tried a full yellow gold, green dial Daytona on my wrist, it made sense. It felt really special and there is a place and time for a watch like that. I fear we might want more than one Daytona after experiencing the whole lot.

Downsides. Safety is one and the stereotype that comes with wearing the most desired Rolex watch. I wear this under long sleeves so I can actually get wrist time and not attract unwanted attention. This way I can appreciate the watch instead of letting it sit in a bank vault.

That aside, getting one from an authorised dealer is near impossible. If a Daytona is what you want, just get one from the grey market. The lap dancing required and spend history needed to be allocated a Daytona does not make sense. Maybe my pocket is too shallow and my rizz game is not smooth but the whole process is not a single ounce of fun. Some people spend less and get allocated a GMT, while others are required to buy things they do not even like just to have a chance to be offered one.

There are protective stickers applied on this watch, a first for me. It was part of a package deal and I thought, why not try something new. The stickers do take away a bit of the shine, which is a non issue to me. It still attracts dust and fingerprints and let's see how it goes in the long run.

I finally got to experience the mythical creature and it is no fluke. The steel Rolex Daytona 126500LN delivers on every front and it is little wonder why people are after one. It suits most wrist sizes. Even ladies can enjoy wearing a Daytona. The design is superb and the wearer does not get wrist fatigue like many professional Rolex watches.

Lastly, it is a must have for my fellow motorsport loving friends. You know that feeling where something is missing during a mountain drive. This is it. You simply cannot go do that without one of these strapped to your wrist, and now you know.
