SCROLL TO EXPLORE

•          SHIANG, THE PERSON

Passion. Hard work. Fun. These are some of the qualities that define Shiang, born in Kuala Lumpur on 20 September 1990. Cheeky and sometimes unfiltered, he's always been in search of genuine, human-to-human connection.

Some say he was drifting with a steering wheel at birth and said "car" before he said "papa." He couldn’t recite the multiplication table but he could recite the entire encyclopedia of cars, front to back.

Shiang was never great at exams and gravitated towards what he loved: engines that howl and clocks that tick. Since then, he’s known one thing for sure, he belongs in the world of cars and watches.

•          THE DRIVER

When he’s not behind a computer, you’ll find him chasing forgotten places to photograph or winding roads best enjoyed with coffee in the cupholder. For Shiang, feeling alive means shaving seconds off lap times while channelling his inner Senna.

In 2017, he crashed and broke his spine (T12 and L1). Pretty devastating for a 60 km/h accident, he not only lost his favourite horse that day, he also had to put a pause on carving the bends as the doctors prescribed him 15 months of recovery.

Despite having the need to undergo surgeries, he swore to get into a coupe as soon as he medically can. You can take motorsport away from him, but you can’t take the motorsport out of him.

CARS. WATCHES. OTHERS?

•          THE PHOTOGRAPHER

While recovering from his spinal injury, Shiang found himself immersed in the films of Wong Kar Wai. Every frame felt like a perfect still photograph. Maybe it is the sunglasses, maybe the endless cigarette smoke. Either way, that was when Shiang got serious about photography.

•          IMPORTANT PEOPLE

Jing is Shiang’s closest confidant, often regarded as his Leslie Cheung due to his frequent appearances in Shiang’s photography projects.

Jing is not only his favourite actor but also his pillar of support where he was there for him during his surgeries and more.

•          IMPORTANT PEOPLE

Jay, his best friend since childhood, is the most genuine person Shiang knows. They might not in the same city but once in the same room, it’s as if they never left because being real is the very secret sauce to decades of friendship.

In 2020, Shiang was reminded of how fragile life can be when he lost one of his best friends, Stanley Swee, to karoshi.

We can be as careful as possible on public roads and work as hard as society expects us to, but there is a limit to how far we can push ourselves. Sometimes, we need to stop and look up at the clouds to walk a longer journey.

Moving to Melbourne, Australia wasn’t the easiest thing for Shiang, but one thing kept him going, photography. He visited VAC Gallery and made it a goal to one day see his work on their walls.

That dream came true in 2023 with his first photographic exhibition, which went on tour at the Public Record Office Victoria and the PMI Victorian History Library.

•          WATCH COLLECTOR

He got his first proper watch after being teased by his father for wearing a lady’s watch.

Back in 2012, a watch wasn’t much of a status symbol or a hype possession like today’s willy-wagging culture. It was appreciated by a not-too-large crowd, where people nerded out on how their choice of watch was an extension of their so-called taste and personality.

Shiang is not into chasing the latest trends and prefers a classic style, like a denim or leather jacket, that has stood the test of time and is here to stay for good.

Shiang’s passion for brand building and marketing took Grind Coffee Bar to second place at Toby’s Estate Victoria’s 2024 Octobysfest Local Legend.

When Shiang is not out chasing adrenaline or his next caffeine fix, he’s curating these pages for you.
